Deep dive: Polymarket CLOB-AMM hybrid solves prediction market liquidity problem
Polymarket hybrid Central Limit Order Book and AMM architecture maintains tight spreads on obscure low-volume questions without dedicated market makers.
One of the persistent challenges in prediction market design is liquidity in long-tail, low-volume markets. Polymarket's answer is a hybrid CLOB and AMM architecture that falls back to algorithmic liquidity provision when human market makers step away.
When the CLOB spread widens by more than 5 cents, the AMM activates using a modified Logarithmic Market Scoring Rule. The subsidy pool is funded by a 0.1% fee on all trades and rebalances every 30 seconds based on new order flow.
This hybrid approach has allowed Polymarket to maintain functional markets on over 1,200 simultaneous questions — far more than any competitor.
